Karen Conklin-Johnson is a Licensed Professional Counselor and Daring Way Trained Facilitator providing confidential therapy for individuals and couples throughout Denver, including City Park, Central Park, Cherry Creek, Wash Park, and Sloan's Lake.

City Park Counseling helps clients work through stress, anxiety, burnout, relationship challenges, and the emotional strain that builds up when you are managing a demanding career, a marriage, parenting, and personal expectations all at once. Through individual therapy, couples and marriage counseling, and pre-marital counseling, Karen combines emotional insight with practical strategies that help clients communicate better, break unhealthy patterns, and build more meaningful connections at home and at work. In-person sessions are available at the City Park office, with virtual appointments available on a limited basis for individual clients when scheduling requires it.

Many of Karen's clients are high-functioning professionals such as executives, physicians, attorneys, business owners, and parents- all who are used to carrying significant responsibility while quietly managing stress, overwhelm, or disconnection underneath the surface. City Park Counseling offers a confidential, nonjudgmental space for people who are ready for greater clarity, stronger relationships, and a more sustainable way of living.

Evidence-Based Therapy (The Daring Way™)

Therapy informed by Brené Brown’s Daring Way™ methodology, helping clients build resilience, understand emotional patterns, and connect deeply.

My Approach

Integrating evidence-based psychotherapy with practical, real-world insight to support meaningful, lasting change for individuals and couples who are ready for something to shift.

Evidence-Based Clinical Therapy

We integrate cognitive-behavioral techniques (CBT), Internal Family Systems (IFS-informed) parts work, somatic grounding, and Gottman Method couples therapy. This blended, custom approach targets the distinct layers of nervous system arousal, emotional habits, and concrete communication tools that are central to relieving both intense personal stress and high-stakes relationship friction.

Relational and Attachment-Focused Work

We focus on the deep attachment blueprints and patterns keeping you stuck in disconnection, recurring criticism cycles, emotional shut-downs, or separate parallel lives. By understanding these root dynamics, we provide individuals and couples with practical methods to construct an organic state of vulnerability, emotional safety, and direct emotional repair.

Practical Integration for Real Life

Knowing 'why' you feel stressed is only half the journey. This work translates clinical insight into high-impact daily practices. We design concrete adjustments for burnout, parenting anxiety, dual-career alignment, and career pressures, making certain your therapeutic progress holds up outside our comfortable consulting room and succeeds within your normal everyday life.

Results We Work Towards Together

Clients often move from feeling overwhelmed, disconnected, or stuck into a more grounded and connected way of living and relating.

01

Improved Communication Under Stress

Communicating more clearly during conflict, pressure, and emotional triggers, especially in long-term relationships and high-stakes environments.

02

Reduced Burnout and Emotional Overload

Moving from chronic stress and over-functioning into better emotional regulation, clearer thinking, and more sustainable energy at work and at home.

03

Stronger, More Secure Relationships

Getting out of cycles of criticism, withdrawal, or parallel living and into relationships with more trust, emotional safety, and the ability to repair after conflict.

04

Greater Self-Awareness and Emotional Clarity

Understanding the patterns behind anxiety, reactivity, perfectionism, or shutdown so clients can respond differently instead of repeating the same cycles.

05

More Stability in High-Pressure Lives

Building internal steadiness while managing demanding careers, leadership roles, parenting, and major life transitions.

The Core Practice Philosophy

The work is not about fixing what is broken, but rather reclaiming your clarity and alignment with intention.

What It’s Like to Work Together

Most clients do not come in because something is “wrong.” They come in because something is not working anymore.

Therapy is focused on helping these changes become consistent, not situational.

Before

Escalating arguments or shutting down completely during minor disagreements.

After

Clear, responsive communication during tension without triggering a fight

Before

Carrying chronic, invisible stress that creates a permanent hum of anxiety.

After

A calm, regulated nervous system that knows how to fully decompress.

Before

Living separate 'parallel lives' with your partner, feeling more like teammates than lovers.

After

Deep, authentic intimacy and a shared frame of friendship that supports you daily.

Before

Reacting automatically from exhaustion, pressure, or historical defense mechanisms

After

Mindful, intentional choices rooted in self-awareness and emotional grounding.
